How to Talk About Feelings and First Impressions in German (A2)

When you reach A2 level in German, you can already talk about simple topics like your name, your job, or your daily routine.
At this level, learners often want to say more: how they feel, what is new or difficult, and what their first impression is.

This is especially useful when you:

  • arrive in a new city or country
  • start a new course or a new job
  • meet new people

1. Talking About Feelings in German (A2)

At A2 level, feelings are usually expressed with the verb sein (to be).

Common A2 Feelings Vocabulary

Simple Sentence Structure

The basic structure is:

Ich bin + Gefühl

Examples:

  • Ich bin froh.

You can add simple words like heute (today) or sehr (very):

  • Ich bin heute müde.
  • Ich bin sehr aufgeregt.

2. Talking About Feelings in New Situations

When something is new, learners often want to explain how they feel at the moment.

Useful A2 phrases:

  • Ich bin neu hier.
  • Alles ist neu.
  • Am Anfang ist alles schwer.

Examples:

  • Ich bin neu hier und ich bin nervös.
  • Am Anfang bin ich oft müde.

3. Talking About First Impressions in German (A2)

A first impression is what you think or feel when you experience something for the first time.

You can also use two short sentences instead of one long sentence:

  • Mein erster Eindruck ist gut. Die Leute sind nett.

This is perfect A2 German.

4. Giving Simple Reasons for Your Feelings (Preview)

At A2 level, learners often want to say why they feel a certain way.
This is usually done with weil (because).

Examples:

  • Ich bin müde, weil ich viel arbeite.
  • Ich bin froh, weil die Leute freundlich sind.

5. Talking About Your First Days and Experiences

To talk about your first days, A2 learners often use:

  • schon (already)
  • noch nicht (not yet)

Examples:

  • Ich habe schon viele Leute kennengelernt.
  • Ich habe noch nicht gearbeitet.

These sentences are very common in:

  • everyday conversations
  • A2 speaking exams
