B1 German: How to Use “um…zu” and “ohne…zu” (With Examples & Exercises)

Introduction

If you want to speak German more naturally at B1 level, you must learn how to express goals and intentions.

Two of the most important structures for this are:

  • um…zu (to express purpose)
  • ohne…zu (to express what does NOT happen)

These structures are essential for B1 German exams (Goethe, TELC, ÖSD) and everyday communication.

👉 If you’re following a structured program, this topic is part of a complete B1 German grammar course designed to take you step by step to fluency.

What Does “um…zu” Mean in German?

We use um…zu to express a goal or purpose.

👉 It answers the question: Warum? (Why?)

Structure:

Hauptsatz + um + (Objekt) + zu + Infinitiv

Examples:

  • Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland zu arbeiten.
  • Er spart Geld, um ein Auto zu kaufen.
  • Wir üben viel, um die Prüfung zu bestehen.

✅ Important:

  • The subject must be the same in both parts
  • The verb goes to the end

💡 You’ll often combine this with other structures like German verbs with prepositions to sound more natural.

What Does “ohne…zu” Mean?

We use ohne…zu to say that something happens without something else happening.

Structure:

Hauptsatz + ohne + (Objekt) + zu + Infinitiv

Examples:

  • Er geht zur Arbeit, ohne zu frühstücken.
  • Sie lernt Deutsch, ohne einen Kurs zu besuchen.
  • Er verlässt das Haus, ohne die Tür zu schließen.

👉 Later, you will also learn a more advanced version using ohne dass in German.

um…zu vs ohne…zu (Quick Comparison)

StrukturBedeutung
um…zupurpose / goal
ohne…zusomething does NOT happen

Common Mistakes (Very Important!)

❌ Ich lerne Deutsch, um ich arbeite in Deutschland.
✅ Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland zu arbeiten.

❌ Er geht, ohne er spricht.
✅ Er geht, ohne zu sprechen.

👉 Rule: Always use zu + infinitive, NOT a conjugated verb.
