Zweiteilige Konnektoren im Deutschen: B2-Grammatik einfach erklärt

1. What are zweiteilige Konnektoren?

Zweiteilige Konnektoren, also called zweiteilige Konjunktionen or paired conjunctions, are expressions made up of two parts that work together to connect words, phrases or clauses.

They help you express relationships such as addition, alternatives, negation and contrast.

At B2 level, these structures are particularly important because they help you express your thoughts more precisely, develop arguments and organise your ideas logically. You can use them in everyday conversations, professional communication, presentations and written texts.

In this lesson, we will explore six important pairs:

  • nicht nur … sondern auch – not only … but also
  • sowohl … als auch – both … and
  • weder … noch – neither … nor
  • entweder … oder – either … or
  • einerseits … andererseits – on the one hand … on the other hand
  • zwar … aber – admittedly … but

Let’s examine how each structure works and how you can use it correctly.

2. Nicht nur … sondern auch

Meaning: not only … but also

We use nicht nur … sondern auch to emphasise that two things are true, relevant or important. The construction can connect nouns, adjectives, verbs, prepositional phrases and clauses.

Examples

  • Sie spricht nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Englisch.
She speaks not only German but also English.
  • Der Kurs ist nicht nur interessant, sondern auch hilfreich.
The course is not only interesting but also helpful.
  • Er lernt nicht nur Deutsch, sondern übt auch seine Aussprache.
He not only learns German but also practises his pronunciation.
  • Nicht nur die Lehrerin, sondern auch die Schüler waren mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden.
Not only the teacher but also the students were satisfied with the result.

Word order

When the construction connects two elements within one sentence, the normal word order usually remains unchanged.

When it connects two complete main clauses, each clause follows the usual main-clause word-order rules.

Compare:

  • Sie lernt nicht nur Deutsch, sondern sie besucht auch einen Konversationskurs.
  • Nicht nur der Preis, sondern auch die Qualität ist entscheidend.

Notice that the two connected elements should have a parallel grammatical structure whenever possible.

B2 tip: Use nicht nur … sondern auch when you want to emphasise an additional argument in an essay or discussion.

3. Sowohl … als auch

Meaning: both … and

We use sowohl … als auch to indicate that two people, things or characteristics apply equally.

Unlike nicht nur … sondern auch, this construction generally presents two elements as equally relevant without explicitly emphasising the second one as an additional surprise.

Examples

  • Ich lerne sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch.
I learn both German and English.
  • Sie ist sowohl freundlich als auch kompetent.
She is both friendly and competent.
  • Sowohl die Mitarbeiter als auch der Chef waren mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden.
Both the employees and the boss were satisfied with the result.
  • Er kann sowohl schreiben als auch sprechen.
He can both write and speak.

Word order and agreement

When sowohl … als auch connects two subjects, the verb is generally plural because the sentence refers to both subjects.

For example:

  • Sowohl meine Schwester als auch mein Bruder wohnen in Berlin.

When the expression connects two objects or characteristics, the existing sentence structure normally remains unchanged.

Sowohl … als auch vs. nicht nur … sondern auch

Compare these sentences:

  • Ich trinke sowohl Tee als auch Kaffee.
I drink both tea and coffee.
  • Ich trinke nicht nur Tee, sondern auch Kaffee.
I drink not only tea but also coffee.

Both sentences communicate addition. However, the second construction can place greater emphasis on the fact that coffee is another relevant item.

4. Weder … noch

Meaning: neither … nor

We use weder … noch to negate two alternatives. The construction expresses that neither of the connected people, things or actions applies.

Examples

  • Ich trinke weder Kaffee noch Tee.
I drink neither coffee nor tea.
  • Er spricht weder Englisch noch Französisch.
He speaks neither English nor French.
  • Sie hat weder Zeit noch Lust.
She has neither the time nor the inclination.
  • Weder der Chef noch die Mitarbeiter waren mit der Entscheidung zufrieden.
Neither the boss nor the employees were satisfied with the decision.

Do you need an additional nicht?

Normally, no. Weder … noch already expresses negation.

Incorrect: Ich trinke nicht weder Kaffee noch Tee.

Correct: Ich trinke weder Kaffee noch Tee.

Adding nicht is generally unnecessary in this construction and may make the sentence ungrammatical or change the intended meaning.

For additional practice with German negation, read our article on Negation in German: nicht vs. kein.

Verb agreement

When weder … noch connects two subjects, the verb is often plural when the subjects are understood together as a plural subject.

For example:

  • Weder meine Schwester noch meine Brüder waren zu Hause.

With more complicated subjects, verb agreement can depend on the grammatical structure and emphasis. Pay attention to the complete sentence rather than automatically copying the form of the nearest noun.

5. Entweder … oder

Meaning: either … or

We use entweder … oder to present two alternatives or choices. Depending on the context, the alternatives may be mutually exclusive or simply different options.

Examples

  • Wir fahren entweder mit dem Bus oder mit dem Zug.
We travel either by bus or by train.
  • Du kannst entweder heute oder morgen kommen.
You can come either today or tomorrow.
  • Entweder lernen wir jetzt, oder wir müssen die Prüfung später schreiben.
Either we study now, or we will have to take the exam later.
  • Ich möchte entweder Medizin oder Informatik studieren.
I would like to study either medicine or computer science.

Keep the structure parallel

The connected elements should have the same grammatical form whenever possible.

Examples:

  • entweder im Büro oder zu Hause
  • entweder mit dem Bus oder mit dem Zug
  • entweder lernen oder arbeiten
  • entweder wir fahren heute oder wir bleiben zu Hause

When entweder … oder connects two main clauses, each clause follows normal main-clause word order.

B2 tip: This construction is particularly useful when making recommendations, discussing alternatives or proposing solutions to a problem.

6. Einerseits … andererseits

Meaning: on the one hand … on the other hand

We use einerseits … andererseits to present two different aspects of an issue. The two aspects may contrast with each other, but they do not necessarily have to be complete opposites.

This construction is particularly useful for discussing advantages and disadvantages, evaluating proposals and developing balanced arguments.

Examples

  • Einerseits ist Homeoffice flexibel, andererseits fehlt manchmal der persönliche Kontakt.
On the one hand, working from home is flexible; on the other hand, personal contact is sometimes missing.
  • Einerseits möchte ich Geld sparen, andererseits möchte ich verreisen.
On the one hand, I want to save money; on the other hand, I want to travel.
  • Einerseits bietet das Internet viele Möglichkeiten, andererseits birgt es auch Risiken.
On the one hand, the internet offers many opportunities; on the other hand, it also involves risks.

Word order

When einerseits or andererseits occupies the first position in a main clause, the conjugated verb comes immediately after it.

Correct: Einerseits ist die Arbeit interessant, andererseits ist sie anstrengend.

Incorrect: Einerseits die Arbeit ist interessant.

The rule is the same as for other elements placed in the first position of a German main clause: the conjugated verb normally occupies the second position.

B2 exam tip: Use this structure to organise your arguments clearly in the Sprechen and Schreiben sections of a B2 exam.

7. Zwar … aber

Meaning: admittedly … but / it is true that … but

We use zwar … aber to acknowledge one fact while introducing a contrasting point. It helps you show that you recognise a limitation or disadvantage without allowing it to determine the entire argument.

Examples

  • Der Film ist zwar lang, aber interessant.
The film is admittedly long, but interesting.
  • Ich habe zwar wenig Zeit, aber ich helfe dir.
I have little time, but I will help you.
  • Die Wohnung ist zwar teuer, aber sie liegt zentral.
The apartment is expensive, but it is centrally located.
  • Zwar ist die Arbeit anstrengend, aber sie macht mir Spaß.
Admittedly, the work is demanding, but I enjoy it.

Word order

When zwar appears within the first main-clause element, the usual main-clause word order applies.

Compare:

  • Das Auto ist zwar alt, aber zuverlässig.
  • Zwar ist das Auto alt, aber es funktioniert gut.

In the first sentence, zwar appears within the predicate area. In the second, zwar begins the main clause, so the conjugated verb follows it immediately.

Zwar … aber vs. einerseits … andererseits

Both constructions express contrast, but they serve slightly different purposes.

  • Zwar … aber acknowledges one fact and then introduces a contrasting or qualifying point.
  • Einerseits … andererseits presents two aspects of an issue, often giving both sides of an argument.

Compare:

Die Stelle ist zwar gut bezahlt, aber sie ist sehr stressig.

Einerseits ist die Stelle gut bezahlt, andererseits ist sie sehr stressig.

The first sentence emphasises the contrast between good pay and stress. The second presents the two aspects more explicitly as competing considerations.

8. Comparing the six paired conjunctions

KonnektorMeaningExample
nicht nur … sondern auchNot only … but alsoSie ist nicht nur nett, sondern auch hilfsbereit.
sowohl … als auchBoth … andEr spricht sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch.
weder … nochNeither … norIch trinke weder Kaffee noch Tee.
entweder … oderEither … orWir fahren entweder heute oder morgen.
einerseits … andererseitsOn the one hand … on the other handEinerseits ist es günstig, andererseits ist es weit entfernt.
zwar … aberAdmittedly … butDas Essen ist zwar teuer, aber lecker.

How can you choose the right connector?

Ask yourself what you want to communicate:

  • Do you want to emphasise an additional fact? Use nicht nur … sondern auch.
  • Do you want to present two equally applicable elements? Use sowohl … als auch.
  • Do you want to reject both alternatives? Use weder … noch.
  • Do you want to offer a choice? Use entweder … oder.
  • Do you want to examine two sides of an issue? Use einerseits … andererseits.
  • Do you want to acknowledge one fact while presenting a contrasting point? Use zwar … aber.

Choosing the appropriate connector makes your German more precise and your arguments easier to follow.

9. Common mistakes with zweiteilige Konnektoren

Mistake 1: Adding an unnecessary negation

Incorrect: Ich habe nicht weder Zeit noch Geld.

Correct: Ich habe weder Zeit noch Geld.

Remember that weder … noch already expresses negation.

Mistake 2: Forgetting verb inversion

Incorrect: Einerseits die Arbeit ist interessant, andererseits ist sie stressig.

Correct: Einerseits ist die Arbeit interessant, andererseits ist sie stressig.

When einerseits occupies the first position, the conjugated verb follows it.

Mistake 3: Forgetting the second part

Incomplete when the paired construction is intended: Sie spricht nicht nur Deutsch.

Complete: Sie spricht nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Englisch.

The first sentence is grammatically possible on its own, but it does not complete the intended paired construction.

Mistake 4: Connecting elements that do not fit grammatically

Try to maintain parallel structures.

Better:

  • sowohl im Büro als auch zu Hause
  • entweder mit dem Bus oder mit dem Zug
  • nicht nur lernen, sondern auch üben

Parallel structures make your sentences easier to understand and help you avoid awkward constructions.

Mistake 5: Using zwar … aber and einerseits … andererseits interchangeably

Although both can express contrast, they organise information differently.

Use zwar … aber to concede a point before presenting a contrasting argument.

Use einerseits … andererseits when you want to examine two aspects of a situation.

10. Using zweiteilige Konnektoren in a B2 discussion

Imagine that you are taking part in a discussion about whether working from home should become the standard for office jobs.

You could express your opinion like this:

Notice how each connector contributes to the argument:

  • Einerseits … andererseits introduces two perspectives.
  • Zwar … aber acknowledges a benefit while introducing a limitation.
  • Sowohl … als auch includes both groups in the argument.
  • Nicht nur … sondern auch emphasises two important considerations.
  • Weder … noch rules out two overly broad assumptions.
  • Entweder … oder presents alternative working arrangements.

These structures help you build a coherent argument instead of listing disconnected opinions.

11. Tom’s story: A difficult decision at work

Tom has been working for a German company for several months. His manager has offered him the opportunity to work from home three days a week. Tom is excited, but he is also unsure whether the arrangement will suit him.

During a team meeting, his colleagues discuss the proposal.

Tom says:

After the meeting, Tom realises that making a good argument does not mean choosing only one side. It means presenting the relevant facts, acknowledging disadvantages and explaining why a particular solution makes sense.

What can you learn from Tom?

Tom uses the six connectors to:

  • Present opposing perspectives.
  • Emphasise additional benefits.
  • Include multiple relevant factors.
  • Negate two possible problems.
  • Propose alternative solutions.

This is exactly the kind of structured expression that makes your German more convincing at B2 level.

12. Exercises: Practise the six connectors

Complete each sentence with an appropriate paired connector. Use each of the six structures at least once.

  1. Sie spricht __________ Deutsch __________ Englisch.
  2. Ich trinke __________ Kaffee __________ schwarzen Tee.
  3. Du kannst __________ heute __________ morgen anrufen.
  4. __________ ist die Wohnung günstig, __________ liegt sie weit vom Bahnhof entfernt.
  5. Er ist __________ intelligent, __________ auch sehr fleißig.
  6. __________ möchte ich den Job annehmen, __________ habe ich Bedenken.
  7. Der Kurs ist __________ anspruchsvoll, __________ sehr hilfreich.
  8. __________ die Lehrerin __________ die Schüler waren mit dem Ergebnis zufrieden.
  9. Wir müssen __________ sparen __________ unsere Ausgaben besser planen.
  10. __________ bietet das Internet viele Chancen, __________ gibt es auch Risiken.

Answer key

  1. sowohl … als auch
  2. weder … noch
  3. entweder … oder
  4. zwar … aber
  5. nicht nur … sondern
  6. einerseits … andererseits
  7. zwar … aber
  8. sowohl … als auch
  9. nicht nur … sondern auch
  10. einerseits … andererseits

Challenge: Choose any three sentences and rewrite them using a different paired connector where the meaning permits it. Explain how the meaning or emphasis changes.

13. What comes next? Mittelfeld im Hauptsatz

You have now learned how to connect ideas using paired conjunctions. But choosing the correct connector is only one part of building sophisticated German sentences. You also need to position the other elements of a sentence correctly.

In the next lesson, we will explore Mittelfeld im Hauptsatz: the order of information within a German main clause.

You will learn about:

  • The Te-Ka-Mo-Lo principle: temporal, causal, modal and local information.
  • The position of dative and accusative objects.
  • The order of nouns and pronouns.
  • Why accusative pronouns generally come before dative pronouns when both are used.
